We opened an office in Paris in 1949 — three years after the firm was founded in New York and Washington. Sixty years later, about half of our lawyers work outside the United States. While that figure punctuates the point that we truly are an international firm, it tells only part of our story.
Also worth noting is the way that we build our presence abroad. The offices we open in new locations are staffed with homegrown Cleary Gottlieb lawyers, which preserves our culture. Equally important, we bring the talents of lawyers across the firm to bear on issues facing local clients.
So it is not surprising that in each of our offices and across each practice area, our lawyers have represented clients on matters that set precedents and defined standards.
All of which has garnered us a reputation as a leading global firm. Lawyers throughout Cleary Gottlieb are regularly cited for their work: more than 130 lawyers and 99 practice areas have been recognized by Chambers Global. LatinFinance magazine cited Cleary Gottlieb as "best law firm" in Latin America for the past 20 years, and we were named "European legal team of the year" at the British Legal Awards.
