New York: LL.M. Recruiting: International Lawyer Program

The New York office annually recruits internationally-trained lawyers to join the firm as International Lawyers for a period of a minimum of nine months following graduation from a U.S. LL.M. or M.C.J. program. Participating lawyers return to their home countries to work with clients or in local law firms following their stay with us in New York. Each year the firm participates in both the NYU International Student Interview Program and the Columbia Overseas-Trained LL.M. Student Interview Program held at the end of January.

The New York office has an established committee on International Lawyers comprising partners and associates that oversees the career development of, and work assignment process for, these lawyers. We pair each newly-arrived International Lawyer with a more senior associate who serves as a "mentor" to provide personal and professional support. This supplements the informal mentoring relationships that develop between senior and junior lawyers in the course of working together and participating in other aspects of firm life.

International Lawyers are invited to attend the firm's informal practice group and subgroup meetings, which are held regularly, to share recent experiences on client projects, to participate in training programs and to exchange information about developments in law and practice. Attendance at these training sessions and meetings is not restricted to those actively engaged in the practice area. In addition, the firm is an accredited New York CLE provider, and we encourage all of our associates to attend in-house programs. We also offer internal training programs that are specifically tailored to address the challenges of lawyers who do not hold a U.S. J.D., and regularly scheduled courses in advanced business and legal English.

Our lawyers in the New York Office work closely with their colleagues in our other offices to represent U.S. and internationally based clients on many of their largest and most complex matters. International Lawyers are assigned work through the same assignment system as regular associates, although the administrators of the program make an effort to ensure that they are receiving appropriate assignments in the areas in which they have expressed an interest.

International Lawyers are invited to attend all of the firm’s social functions throughout the year, and to assist the firm in its recruiting efforts.

Our International Lawyers not only provide the New York office with substantive legal resources and knowledge from other jurisdictions, they also become part of a worldwide network of alumni and help strengthen our relationships with many firms outside the United States.

Candidates from these programs are selected to become International Lawyers in New York.
