CAREERS

Candidates trained in China who have successfully interviewed with us and have received and accepted a permanent offer to join our Beijing office as associates may be eligible to begin their career with the firm in either our New York or Washington office for approximately nine months following graduation from a U.S. LL.M. or M.C.J. program. Each year the firm participates in both the NYU International Student Interview Program and the Columbia Overseas-Trained LL.M. Student Interview Program held at the end of January.

The New York office has an established committee comprising partners and associates that oversees the career development of, and work assignment process for, our international associates. We pair each newly-arrived associate with a more senior associate who serves as a "mentor" to provide personal and professional support. This supplements the informal mentoring relationships that develop between senior and junior lawyers in the course of working together and participating in other aspects of firm life.

Associates are invited to attend the firm's informal practice group and subgroup meetings, which are held regularly, to share recent experiences on client projects, to participate in training programs and to exchange information about developments in law and practice. Attendance at these training sessions and meetings is not restricted to those actively engaged in the practice area. In addition, the firm is an accredited New York CLE provider, and we encourage all of our associates to attend in-house programs. Outside CLE programs are also available for those seeking further professional development. We also offer internal training programs that are specifically tailored to address the challenges of lawyers who do not hold a U.S. J.D., and regularly scheduled courses in advanced business and legal English.

Our lawyers in the New York Office work closely with their colleagues in our other offices to represent U.S. and internationally based clients on many of their largest and most complex matters. Internationally-trained associates are assigned work through the same assignment system as U.S.-trained associates, although the administrators of the program make an effort to ensure that they are receiving appropriate assignments in the areas in which they have expressed an interest.

All associates are given an annual formal review. Written comments are prepared and submitted by all of the partners and counsel with whom an associate has worked.

These comments are synthesized and developed into an overview of the associate's experience. We intend the review process to be participatory, and encourage associates to be involved in developing their career paths as well as strategies to achieve their goals.

All associates are invited to attend various firm social functions throughout the year, and to assist the firm in its recruiting efforts.
