International Litigation and Arbitration

Globally renowned for our dynamic international litigation and arbitration practice, Cleary Gottlieb’s U.S. and Europe-based litigators are skilled at handling an extraordinarily wide range of international litigations and arbitrations for multinational and domestic financial institutions and corporations, sovereign governments and state-owned institutions. Our litigators frequently work together on the increasingly numerous disputes conducted on more than one continent.

With the opening of our Paris office in 1949, Cleary Gottlieb was the first U.S.-based law firm to hire and promote non-U.S. lawyers as equal partners. Today, our approximately 80 senior international litigation and arbitration specialists globally represent clients in the United States, Europe, Russia, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. We routinely litigate or arbitrate cases under both U.S. and foreign law. Our matters frequently involve the coordination of proceedings in multiple jurisdictions and multinational discovery. We have extensive experience in international arbitrations under the laws of a variety of different countries, as well as investment treaty arbitration and other arbitrations involving public international law, in litigating matters implicating the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, and in enforcing or challenging arbitration awards and foreign judgments in the United States and U.S. judgments abroad. We have successfully represented clients in arbitrations under a variety of arbitral rules, including the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the Organization for the Harmonization of African Business Law (OHADA), the Rules of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators (SMA), and the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC).

We have a proven track record of achieving landmark victories, such as the first U.S. ruling that Argentine insolvency proceedings are enforceable under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Clients, therefore, often call upon our litigators to handle high-stakes disputes involving complicated fact patterns as well as novel questions of law.
