Washington associates who wish to practice abroad may request assignment to one of the firm’s overseas offices. Short-term assignments (usually for a period of three to six months) and long-term assignments (usually for a period of approximately three years) are available. Such assignments are generally made after an associate has practiced for a period of time (generally one to two years) in the Washington office, but some associates go overseas earlier in their careers. We also permit a limited number of U.S. lawyers to start their careers in our London and Hong Kong offices on a case-by-case basis. Currently, approximately 50 associates from the New York and Washington offices are working in our offices in Europe and Asia. The firm provides associates working overseas with assistance in locating housing and with moving allowances.
