Jeremy Calsyn is a partner based in the Washington, D.C. office.
Mr. Calsyn's practice focuses on transactional antitrust matters, criminal and civil Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission investigations, and antitrust litigation in federal and state courts, including complex class actions.
In the transactional area, he recently represented Alpha Natural Resources in its $8.5 billion acquisition of Massey Energy Company and VeriSign Inc. in the $1.28 billion sale of its Identity and Authentication Security business to Symantec Corporation. In addition, he represented The Dow Chemical Company in worldwide antitrust matters in the $1.63 billion sale of its Styron business unit to Bain Capital Partners, its $15.4 billion acquisition of Rohm and Haas, and its $1.6 billion sale of Morton Salt to K+S AG. He also represented Mittal Steel in 2006 on the international merger control aspects of its groundbreaking €26.6 billion acquisition of Arcelor. Other transactions include Barclay's acquisition of Lehman Brothers' North American investment banking business, Alpha Natural Resources’ $2 billion acquisition of Foundation Coal, acquisitions by Evraz Group of Oregon Steel, Citisteel, Highveld, and IPSCO Tubulars, Bank of America’s $35 billion acquisition of MBNA, NASDAQ’s acquisition of Instinet, and The Dow Chemical Company’s acquisition of Union Carbide.
In antitrust litigation matters, he has counseled businesses such as DHL’s freight forwarding business, LG Display, Kureha Chemical, Asahi Kasei Corporation, and Asahi Glass Corporation in connection with class action litigation alleging antitrust violations. He has also represented clients in a number of criminal and civil antitrust investigations by the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.
Mr. Calsyn is recognized as a leading antitrust lawyer by
Chambers USA. In 2012,
Global Competition Review's "40 Under 40" survey named him among the most talented competition lawyers under 40 years old.
Mr. Calsyn joined the firm in 1999 and became partner in 2008. He received a J.D. degree,
magna cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center in 1999 and an undergraduate degree,
summa cum laude, from Southwest Missouri State University in 1995. From 2000 to 2001 he served as law clerk to the Honorable Louis F. Oberdorfer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Mr. Calsyn is a member of the Bars in California and the District of Columbia.
