With no formal departments or rotations for any of its lawyers, Cleary Gottlieb offers summer associates the opportunity to enjoy assignments in a variety of practice areas or focus on a particular discipline, in a flexible and diverse environment.

Summer associates get exposure to “real world” practice where summer associates play active and meaningful roles in ongoing matters.

Potential for rotations in one of our 10 overseas offices, with 3 out of 9 summers from the 2010 summer class going overseas.

All summer associates who express an interest receive pro bono assignments from our broad pro bono practice.

Extensive formal and informal training, including informational summer lunches and weekly meetings hosted by various practice areas, a writing seminar, an interactive litigation “bootcamp” with a mock deposition exercise and office-wide CLE sessions.

As a complement to the formal training and partner supervision, our summer associates benefit from personal mentoring from the associates who serve on our Summer Program Committee and as junior “siblings.”

Wide array of cultural and recreational events exploring what Washington, DC life has to offer – in 2010 they ranged from partner-hosted dinners to cocktails and dinner at the W Hotel, from a Top Chef Cooking Course to the organization of and participation in a food drive to benefit a local food bank.
