Cleary Gottlieb was founded in New York and Washington simultaneously in 1946. The New York office currently has approximately 600 lawyers representing both U.S. and international clients in a wide range of general and highly specialized practice areas. The New York office occupies eleven floors of a modern building in the city’s financial district, with a 360-degree panoramic view of New York City and New Jersey. The firm also maintains a conference center in midtown Manhattan for client meetings.
Our New York office handles many of the notable corporate transactions, as well as major investigations and litigation, in the financial world. Our corporate practice includes assignments in capital markets, M&A and joint ventures, corporate counseling, bankruptcy and restructuring, sovereign and international institution representation, privatizations, banking and other financial institution matters, real estate, project finance, structured finance, derivatives and commodities and private equity. Our litigation and arbitration practice includes matters involving securities and derivatives, banking and financial institutions, M&A, criminal defense and investigations, antitrust, agency and regulatory, insurance coverage and products liability. The New York practice also covers the multiple dimensions of intellectual property, employment and pension issues, individual clients and charitable organizations. Our tax lawyers provide comprehensive representation, as part of the firm’s highly interwoven, seamless legal practice. Our corporate and litigation specialists frequently share expertise to provide blanket coverage – “one stop” legal shopping for our clients. As part of the firm’s overall structure, the office is not departmentalized by practice areas. Many of our lawyers handle a variety of assignments in several of the practice areas described.
The firm’s cooperative efforts apply not only among practice areas, but also across jurisdictions. Many of the lawyers in our New York office have had international experience, including rotations in one or more of our offices around the world. Thus, our lawyers adroitly manage international transactions and dispute resolutions, and provide collaborative support to our colleagues in offices around the globe.
