Cleary Gottlieb, together with TD Securities and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF), hosted, “LGBTQ Rights in Front of the U.S. Supreme Court,” a discussion on contemporary transgender issues in the United States.

The panel discussion outlined the Aimee Stephens case, a transgender discrimination case that could become a litmus test for LGBTQ rights in the United States. Panelist included:

  • David Brown, Legal Director, TLDEF
  • Michael T. Brown, VP, Tax Counsel & Head of U.S. Tax, Tax Services, TD Securities
  • Howard Zelbo, Partner, Cleary Gottlieb

In July 2019, Cleary and the TLDEF filed an amicus brief in support of Aimee Stephens in her case before the U.S. Supreme Court after a Michigan funeral home fired her from her job in 2013 because she is a transgender woman.
