The Washington office of Cleary Gottlieb was established in 1946, when the firm was founded, and currently has more than 100 lawyers. The office’s primary practice areas include antitrust, corporate (including transactional and regulatory) and litigation.
Antitrust lawyers in the Washington office have been involved in many of the major U.S. and international merger transactions over the past decade. Our antitrust lawyers also represent a wide range of parties in private antitrust suits and criminal and civil investigations, as well as companies requiring counseling on antitrust compliance. Antitrust lawyers in the Washington office work closely with their counterparts in our European offices to create a global competition group.
The office’s corporate practice includes SEC regulatory and enforcement matters; bank regulatory, compliance and transactional work; structured transactions and derivatives; capital markets activities; and M&A and joint venture transactions. Our corporate lawyers serve a clientele of leading domestic and international financial institutions and corporations.
The office has a broad litigation practice, with particular emphasis on antitrust class actions, securities and financial litigation, and international arbitration. Many of our litigation assignments involve representation of non-U.S. clients.
In addition to the regulatory work mentioned above, our lawyers are also engaged in the practice of environmental and energy law.
The office’s 22 partners include several with significant government experience. Our ranks include two former General Counsel of the SEC; a former General Counsel of the FDIC; a former Deputy Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Competition; a former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust; a former Assistant United States Attorney and Assistant to the Solicitor General; and a former Principal Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. Air Force.
The Washington office is not departmentalized, and many of our lawyers practice in more than one practice area. For more information about the firm’s practice areas, click here.
