The firm takes great pride in the number of former judicial clerks who choose to become Cleary Gottlieb associates. As of August 1, 2010, 88 of our lawyers have clerked with a U.S. District Court judge, 60 have clerked with a U.S. Court of Appeals judge and 16 have clerked with a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. A number of our lawyers also have clerked for judges on the highest court of various states of the United States and on courts of other countries, including the European Court of Justice. The firm gives seniority credit for each year of any judicial clerkship completed and pays a one-time monetary bonus to incoming or returning associates who complete one or more judicial clerkship.
