Thomas M. Buhl is a partner based in the Frankfurt office.
Mr. Buhl’s practice focuses on litigation and arbitration matters. His practice has also encompassed German and international mergers & acquisitions, including privately negotiated transactions and public takeovers, joint ventures and corporate restructurings.
Mr. Buhl’s recent litigation and arbitration experience includes the representing of the Republic of Argentina in numerous proceedings based on non-servicing of bonds brought by the holders of Argentine debenture bonds. Mr. Buhl is also counsel to the Agfa-Gevaert group in a series of ICC arbitrations against AgfaPhoto Holding GmbH respectively AgfaPhoto GmbH in connection with disputes arising out of AgfaGevaert’s carve-out and divestiture of its consumer image business. Mr. Buhl represents LHB Internationale Handelsbank in proceedings before German courts brought by the Republic of Croatia concerning the distribution of monetary reserves of the former National Bank of Yugoslavia. Furthermore, Mr. Buhl is counsel to Daewoo International in proceedings with a retail chain as well as various wholesalers.
Selected recent matters handled by Mr. Buhl in the mergers & acquisitions and joint venture sector include the representation of ArcelorMittal in the sale of the steel plant Stahlwerk Thüringen and the Polish plant Huta Bankowa as well as in the auction sale of the Italian long carbon steel plant Travi e Profilati di Pallanzeno. Mr. Buhl was also counsel to Agfa-Gevaert in the sale of its consumer imaging business to an investor group consisting of private investors, private-equity funds and members of the management team.
Mr. Buhl joined the firm in 1982 and became a partner in 1990. From 1983 to 1991, he was resident in the Paris office, from 1991 to 2003 in the Frankfurt office and from 2004 to 2007 in the Cologne office. Since July 2007, he is based again in the Frankfurt office. Mr. Buhl received an LL.M. degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1982. He became a
Rechtsanwalt in 1980 and a French
avocat in 1987.
Mr. Buhl is a member of the Bars in Frankfurt and Paris. His native language is German, and he is fluent in English and French.
