Ms. Buell is senior counsel based in the firm’s New York office.

Ms. Buell was a partner in the firm from January 1990 to January 2012, with a litigation practice based on the defense of complex civil litigations, with a particular focus on bankruptcy and merger and acquisition litigation. She has acted as principal litigation counsel in all areas of bankruptcy litigation, including plan litigation and preference and fraudulent conveyance actions. Ms. Buell has played a key role in a variety of Chapter 11 matters, including representation of debtors Nortel Networks, Inc., Covanta Energy Corporation and Bridge Information Systems, Inc. as Chapter 11 debtors and of Cadillac Fairview, Inc. and its subsidiaries in the U.S.-Canadian cross-border restructuring of those companies. Ms. Buell has also represented multiple targets and acquirers in merger and acquisition related litigation.

As senior counsel, Ms. Buell now focuses on pro bono matters related to innovation in the criminal justice system and women’s issues. Ms. Buell also actively participates in associate development and mentoring initiatives in the litigation group.

Ms. Buell began work at the firm in 1984 after clerking for Judge William C. Conner of the Southern District of New York and was a partner from 1990 to 2011. She is a graduate of the Georgetown Law Center, where she graduated, magna cum laude, and was Executive Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. She received an undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Ms. Buell is a member of the Bar of the State of New York and of the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as a number of lower Federal courts, including the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Third and Sixth Circuits and the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. She is a member of the Bar Association of the City of New York, where she is a past chair of the Committee on Women in the Profession. Ms. Buell is a member of the YWCA Academy of Women Leaders and has previously served on the Board of Legal Advisors to Legal Momentum (formerly the Now Legal Defense Fund).
